Hello This is Yuto.

Ive been using my IPhone5s for two and a half years and ive totally missed my opportunity to change it. How often do you replace your phone?

two years contact

Most major carriers require us to sign a two year contract when buying a phone. This means that there is a termination fee if we decide to change our phone within 24 months.

I have been using my IPhone 5s since Jan 2014. In Jan 2016 (exactly 2years), i went to the store to change my phone but the rumor at that time was that iPhoneSE was coming out within few months. I liked the size of my phone so i decided to wait for it.

The bad news is that i didnt know this two years contract gets renewed automatically. This means that i need to keep my phone until Jan 2018 or otherwise pay my termination fee of 9500 yen.

In the current contract, i only have one month every two years to change my phone without paying a termination fee.

Am I the only one that feels like we're getting scammed here?

Missed my chance to change to IPhoneSE

So, i chose to wait and IPhoneSE was finally out on Mar 31,2016. i was ready to change my phone but it had to wait a while because i was out of japan for a business trip. I headed right to the store once i was back but IPhoneSE (64GB model) was already sold out.

Did Apple not expect this? I thought I heard the sales for IPhoneSE wasnt as good as they expected. But still, I couldn't get one.

So whats my plan?

So, im here, stuck with my two and a half year old IPhone 5s. Its already May but IPhone SE still isnt in the market. IPhone 6s is better spec-wise but it feels a bit too late to get it now since Apple usually comes up with a new model every fall.

Considering that im probably going to be using my next phone for another two years, it seems like im stuck with my IPhone 5s until the next model comes out.

How about a simpler contract?

Contracts for cell phones have been complex since the first of them. Even before smartphones came out.

There was an article i read that said that the total price we pay for a phone in japan is around the same as what people in the US pays.

Phone has become a necessity. i am alright with paying what it costs but i really hope they come up with a simpler contract.

The termination fee is worst part of the current contract. The reason we feel like we're being scammed is because we have to pay to quit. There is almost no way of getting out of it so they might as well make us pay when we buy the phone.

Let that be, Why is the contract being renewed automatically? Might as well call it a life long contract with the special offers to terminate for free once every 24 months.

I really hope each carriers come up with a simpler contract or otherwise it may be our time to move on to a SIM free phone.
